FAQ

Hay! -that’s not how you spell “enlightenment”!

You are absolutely right. It all started when I decided to give my photography an “official” name. I wanted a name that I also could use as a internet domain so I set to work and came up with all sorts of good names for myself… but none of them were available as a dot.com domain. Perhaps you haven’t had the opportunity to do any searching for web domain names recently. If you ever do you will quickly realize that nearly anything you would want as yourname.com someone else has already registered. So after tons of searching and long after all the best names I came up with were ditched I settled on EnLite Photographic Art as my business name –and soon after registered enliteart.com as my web domain. Thus, when it came time for a blog title (special thanks to Rob for his suggestion) I settled for “A Moment of EnLitenment”.

Why in the world are you still shooting with a Nikon D1x?

Good question; why would anyone in photography still want to shoot with such an outdated, small screened, slow, low rez, noisy, bad flashing, camera? First of all, there is a rather bad idea going around that says “if you don’t have the latest and greatest equipment –probably your pictures will be trash”. It simply is not true. I know the camera companies do all they can to suggest otherwise but my camera and the couple of lenses I have work just fine. Wouldn’t a newer, faster, less noisy camera be a lot better for me? Yes, of course. But if you haven’t checked in a while, camera equipment is very expensive (you probably haven’t checked on the price of a college education either, have you?). Simply put, I have no rich uncle funding my photography (or my life) so I buy and sell each piece of equipment very carefully. I certainly don’t have all that I would like –or even all I could use, I simply try to use what I have. Will I be upgrading when I get the funds? Absolutely. Until then you will find me click’n away with my D1x.

What’s up with this weird blog design?

You may think it is weird or that it’s overly normal. Whichever is the case I’m afraid I personally must take the blame. I have found that I rather enjoy working with web code and this is my first attempt at designing a blog. I was aiming for an “earthy” theme -different, yet not too far from the norm. It ended up pretty much just a variation on a very common style. I’m sure I will be making some adjustments as we go along and already have some great ideas for version 2.0, but don’t hold your breath, it will be awhile.

Why are there salamanders crawling between the posts?

Glad you asked. I needed something to divide the posts and thought of these outlines of a Peaks of Otter Salamander (Plethodon hubrichti). The Peaks of Otter Salamander is a species of very restricted range and found only along a (aprox.) 8×15 km stretch of a mountain range in Virginia. I did some research on these little critters as an undergraduate student and so they are little special to me. The outline that appears on the blog is squished slightly out of proportion from the original but the shape has not been altered otherwise. If you would like to know more about them… don’t worry I’m sure I will post about them sometime.
