An Intro to Everything
Jun, 17
Hello and welcome! As I’m clicking the last few buttons to make this blog alive I thought I ought to post something as a sort of introduction… but to be honest -I’m still trying to figure out what it is I’ve started. Only time will tell, but according to the title it’s supposed to be a place of enlightenment -i.e. a place where biology, science, photography, and research all come together into a place of information, discovery, and understanding. How that’s all going to happen we have yet to find out, but hopefully it’s a journey we’ll both enjoy.
With that said, there are a few things I do know about this blog. For starters it’s not simply another photo blog where every few days I post a few photos from my last trip to a fantastic location -I think there are already enough of those to satisfy everyone. It’s also not a place where you will find a post about every latest and greatest invention -I’ll leave that to people who have more time and money than me. But that’s not to say I won’t ever post images from a recent trip or review equipment. It may simply mean that you haven’t thought to go where I’ve been and the equipment I review may not be from a major camera manufacturer.
As you will soon find out -I like animals -big, small, furry, slimy… and all the other ones that fall in between. Currently I’m studying bats -the federally endangered Indiana Bat (Myotis sodalis) to be exact. (No that’s not one pictured above, that’s a picture I took last year of an Eastern Pipistrelle.) Over the next several years I hope to learn a bit more about them and their use of habitat. They aren’t the only critter I’ve worked with. As an undergraduate student I did a little research on the Peaks of Otter Salamander (Plethodon hubrichti) a species of very restricted range… but that’s another story. If you haven’t figured it out already -I also like photography. Unfortunately my subjects of study aren’t always the easiest things to photograph so they make me work at it. I learn a lot and sometimes still don’t get very far but it’s fun trying. Some of you will notice in the image above that the left eye go lost in the shadow. Is that ok? I still haven’t decided.
There are a few other things perhaps you will notice. I spend quite a bit of time working with computers. Believe it or not I’ve spent about 5 months on this blog -learning, building, changing, tweaking, and then changing it all over again. The design is perhaps overly ordinary… but hay it’s my first attempt so we will run it like this for a while and then I’ll change it all over again. I noticed that many photo blogs seem to take a long time to load on a slower internet connections so I’ve tried to implement a few things here to keep the page size down. The pictures are basically at fault so my posts show only a smallish sized thumbnails. The full-sized version is viewable by clicking the thumbnail. You may also want to check out the “main” website -it’s how I got started writing web code. There you will find some image galleries an find out how you can order fine art prints of my images.
Well, I’m not exactly sure what this means or how we are going to get there but here we go on a quest for enlightenment. Comments and suggestions are always appreciated! ENJOY!
